Tumor Necrosis Factor is a pro-inflammatory cytokine primarily made by immune cells like macrophages, monocytes, and T-cells. TNF plays a central role in acute and chronic inflammation, orchestrating immune responses to infection, tissue injury, and autoimmune processes. Elevated levels associated with a wide range of conditions including rheumatoid arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease, sepsis, cachexia (wasting syndrome), metabolic disorders, cardiovascular risk, and certain cancers. This test quantifies circulating TNF in serum, providing insight into the degree of inflammatory activation that may not be fully captured by more common markers like CRP or ESR.
