The estimated glomerular filtration (GFR) is used to asses the filtering capability of the kidneys. Unlike standard creatinine eGFR, which can be skewed by muscle mass, nutrition, age, or body composition, cystatin C is produced at a nearly constant rate and is almost entirely dependent on glomerular filtration rate (GFR). As a result Cystatin C with eGFR may be used to assess kidney function, particularly when creatinine estimated GFR may be inaccurate.
Preparation
Overnight fasting is preferred.
